    In this report, Peter Wobst considers how Tanzania's structural adjustment reforms of the late 1980s and early 1990s affected agriculture, as well as growth, equity, and poverty alleviation--in others words, the economic well-being of the people in this extremely poor country. The report also presents a computable general equilibrium model of the Tanzanian economy and an updated social accounting matrix.

    The Tanzania government has formed a four-man task force to investigate a massive corruption scandal involving government officials suspected to have pocketed millions of Tanzania shillings in compensation to some 900 people relocated from a gold mining area in Geita, Mwanza, on the shores of Lake Victoria.

    Tanzanian refugees who fled to Kenya from the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar have told UNHCR that they would be ready to return home "if talks between the government and the opposition [Civic United Front (CUF)] lead to a declaration that would ease tensions on the islands".

    The purpose of the paper is to understand the causes of policy reform in Tanzania. It covers the time period from the beginning of the severe economic crisis in Tanzania in 1979 up to the present, but to put this in perspective it also briefly outlines the policies pursued before that. The study investigates how aid has encouraged, generated, influenced, supported or even retarded reforms.

  • Tanzania Telecoms goes to MSI Cellular

  • IMF COMPLETES TANZANIA REVIEW UNDER PRGF LOAN AND APPROVES $US26 MILLION

    The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today completed the second review of Tanzania's performance under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF)[1] arrangement. The decision will enable Tanzania to draw SDR 20 million (about US$26 million) immediately.
