This book is a biography of Josiah Tshangana Gumede, the ANC leader most
credited with cementing the ANC's longstanding relationship to the
Soviet Union. The "dustheap of South African historiography" has claimed
a number of casualties, one being JT Gumede. He is more well-known to a
later generation as the father of Archie Gumede, one of the past
presidents of the now-defunct United Democratic Front. The book surveys
his controversial carer as an African political leader in the early 20th
century, as a civil rights leader and leading opponent of racial
injustice and points to his historical importance.
Gumede is well known as the first ANC President to have visited Moscow
and Georgia in 1927. It is less well known that he acted as Headman of
Black Scouts during the South African War in Natal 1988- 1902; that he
worked in the Native Refugee Department at Harrismith after the War;
that he led a Sotho delegation to England in 1907 to petition the
British king concerning Black land claims in the Orange river Colony;
was part of two SA Native National Congress delegations abroad; was
instrumental in bringing the Communist Party of SA closer to the ANC
after 1927 and that he was ousted as ANC president in 1930 by Pixley
Seme.

The book has drawn favourable criticism.
Youssuf Rassool, author of _Distrixt Six - Lest we forget_ has suggested
'...it is a crime if the work does not find a publisher.'
Prof Apollon Davidson of Moscow State University found the book 'most
interesting' and Marika Sherwood of the Institute of Commonwealth
Studies suggested: 'This work is most engrossing, well-researched and
clearly written.'
The author, Raymond van Diemel, is an independent researcher and
film-maker. He completed his doctorate in history at the University of
the Western Cape in 1997. Segments of his film, "Women of Courage" were
broadcast on SABC in 2000. He is currently writing his second book on
Dulcie September, the ANC representative assassinated in Paris, France
in March 1988.
