Competition for IDRC Internship Awards
The International Development Research Centre is holding a competition for Internship Awards this Fall. These awards provide exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff. Internships are tenable for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 12 months at IDRC headquarters in Ottawa or in a Regional Office. Candidates can be Canadians (or permanent residents) or citizens of developing countries, and should have had some training at the Master's level. Deadline for receipt of applications is September 14, 2001. Awards will commence in January 2002.

* Peacebuilding and Reconstruction (PBR)
The candidate is expected to have an interest in one or more of the following
three dimensions of post-conflict reconstruction with a specific focus on the
Middle East, Central America and Southern Africa:
Democratization
Human security
The political economy of peace building
* Micro Impacts of Macroeconomic and Adjustment Policies (MIMAP)
Poverty measurement, monitoring and analysis (e.g. Community Bases Monitoring
System)
Poverty-governance links
Social security/safety nets
Poverty-gender links
Trade liberalization and globalization
The candidate should have knowledge/familiarity with Computable General
Equilibrium (CGE) models and poverty monitoring approaches.
* Trade, Employment and Competitiveness (TEC)
The candidate should focus on one of the following issues and should be familiar
with the current World Trade Organization (WTO) and/or regional trade
negotiations agenda:
Labour cost, employment and competitiveness (in Asia)
International trade dimensions of value chains analysis
Trade-dimensions of genetically modified organisms (GEOS) and food safety
* Cities Feeding People (CFP)
The candidate should have a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences,
Environmental Studies, Geography, Engineering, or Agriculture and knowledge of
urban agriculture issues, particulary wastewater treatment and reuse. Interest
in the Middle East and excellent English and familiarity with Arabic would be an
asset.
* Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health (ECOHEALTH)
The candidate is expected to have an interest in the work accomplished at the
national and international levels on environment and health since the Rio
Conference, with special reference to the work that IDRC has done on public
health and ecosystem approaches to human health. The candidate should have a
background in public health and environment. A bilingual (English-French)
capability would be an asset.
* Managing Natural Resources (Africa and the Middle East): People, Land and
Water (PLAW)
Gender and natural resources management
The candidate must have a good knowledge of Web page design.
* Managing Natural Resources (Latin America): Minga
Indigenous land and water rights in Latin America
* Managing Natural Resources (Asia): Community Based Natural Resource Management
(CBNRM)
The candidate should be familiar with sustainable livelihoods and poverty
alleviation in resource-dependent rural
communities in Asia with focus on one or more IDRC partner countries in the
region: China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, Laos
and Indonesia.
* Sustainable Use of Biodiversity (SUB)
Issues, methodologies and/or policies relating to community management of
biodiversity (ie. indigenous vegetables, wild foods, medicinal plants)
Access to biodiversity, including tenure, with a focus on gender
* Pan Networking (PAN)
Literature reviews of the impact of Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs) on women in the developed and developing world
* Acacia (Communities and the Information Society in Africa)
Secondary source research on the operation and impact of SchoolNets in the
developed and developing world
