Two university students have been shot dead in a clash with soldiers at Buea University in English-speaking western Cameroon, the government said on Friday. The deaths follow several days of protests at the English-speaking university in Cameroon's southwest province bordering Nigeria, and come as angry students at the country's largest university, Yaounde One, negotiate with officials to end 10 days of trouble there.

As spaces of production, diffusion and legitimation of knowledge, universities around the world have for more than a decade, logically found themselves at the heart of the debate on the knowledge society, and of the wave of reforms it stirred up. The Cahiers de la Recherche sur l'Éducation et les Savoirs wishes to throw a comparative and critical light on the on-going transformations of universities and higher education fields of countries in both the North and the South. An official report has found that the Zambian government was not "giving sufficient priority" to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and has called for universal access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.

Some 1.7 million children are still out of school despite the free primary education programme, a workshop was told this week. Out of these are some 200,000, who dropped out after enrolling under the programme, which was introduced by the Narc Government.

The GenARDIS small grants fund was initiated in 2002 by CTA, IICD and IDRC, to support work on gender-related issues in ICTs for ACP agricultural and rural development. The programme was developed in recognition of the constraints and challenges encountered by rural women in ACP countries with respect to ICTs. The challenges include cultural factors that hinder women's access to ICTs, limited time availability to participate in training and use of ICTs, minimal access to technology such as radios, mobile telephones or computers, and inadequate availability of information in local languages that is relevant to local contexts.

Although more of the world’s children are going to school than ever before, and the gender gap is shrinking globally - according to a UN report launched on Monday - little of this progress is visible in south Sudan, relief workers told IRIN. Ben Parker, communication officer for the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, said: "I guess we are probably at the bottom. If southern Sudan were a country it would be one of the worst in the world in terms of primary school enrolment, and it would have one of the worst gender gaps."

If Africa's populations are to attain an acceptable level of well-being, the search must go on for ways of meeting the challenge of illiteracy, concludes a new UNESCO publication. The publication "Unshackling Literacy" is written by Marc-Laurent Hazoumê and published by the UNESCO Institute for Education. It looks at the state of literacy in Africa. "There is no doubt that great advances have been accomplished,” the author says. "However, for various political, economic and social reasons, the place of these advances is now regrettably slowing down, causing in turn an undeniable rise in illiteracy".

A fire that swept through a cheap hotel just behind the Paris Opéra last week, claiming 24 lives and leaving dozens of people injured has illuminated a corner of Europe's broader illegal immigration debate - what to do with the Continent's swelling tide of undocumented aliens, known in France as "sans papiers," or "without papers." The hotel was part of a circuit of low-end city lodgings contracted by government-funded agencies to house asylum seekers or undocumented aliens whose requests for residency in France have been denied.
