Three broad facts about education have emerged from recent research. Firstly, almost universally education is found to lift people out of poverty. Secondly, when a comparison is made between investing in education and other forms of investment, the returns from investing in education are on average lower. Thirdly, the returns to education - in the sense of the increment in income that accrues to each year of education - are much higher for those with higher levels of education.

The Central Mozambique Field Director (CMFD) oversees HAI'S public health projects in Manica and Sofala Provinces in Central Mozambique, which includes the administration of multiple grants and 40+ staff in two field offices in Chimoio and Beira. This article questions the standard statistics used by policy makers and others to assess the issue and response of children who lose one or more of their parents to HIV/Aids. The author compares statistics cited by the two main sources of orphan data, and finds that they differ widely. He argues that the often-used figures used for regular 'Children on the Brink' reports, overestimate the numbers of orphans by 30-50%.

Using a pioneering methodology, this survey from UNICEF UK measures the extent of child poverty, in terms not only of income, but of deprivation of basic human rights such as shelter, food, water, sanitation, health, education and information. The CS Mott Foundation's Board of Trustees recently decided to continue the Foundation's Civil Society programme in South Africa in years to come. The programme focuses on three themes: strengthening the non-profit sector and philanthropy; promoting rights, responsibilities and participation; and improving race and ethnic relations with HIV/Aids as a cross-cutting theme.
The Foundation is to further stress the cross-cutting theme of HIV/Aids over all three grant making areas, and it will also intensify its work in the area of race and ethnic relations.

Protesting University of Zambia students this week disrupted a senate meeting convened to consider a 100 per cent hike in tuition fees.
