HelpAge International is a global network of organisations, working with and for disadvantaged older people worldwide to achieve a lasting improvement in the quality of their lives. We link direct services work with policy, advocacy and campaigning work at national and international levels, for 11 regional development centres and country programmes. The successful candidate will have strategic and day-to-day management responsibilities for HelpAge International’s current and new HIV/AIDS work in the Africa Regional Development Centre, taking forward advocacy work aimed at mainstreaming ageing into global HIV/AIDS strategies and key initiatives.

Salary from £21,233 gross per annum.

HelpAge International has a long track record of work in the field of HIV/AIDS as it impacts on older people, who are often the carers of those orphaned by and/or living with HIV/AIDS. In recent years this work has developed strongly, particularly in Africa, and HIV/AIDS has been identified as a strategic priority for HelpAge International. We are currently looking to recruit a dedicated person to lead HelpAge International’s HIV/AIDS work in Africa and to ensure the development, implementation, and evaluation of a regional HIV/AIDS strategy that meets the expressed needs of older people and provides valuable lessons for ourselves and for other organisations; advocating with a wide range of stakeholders for the inclusion of older people in HIV/AIDS responses.
The successful candidate will have strategic and day-to-day management responsibilities for HelpAge International’s current and new HIV/AIDS work in the Africa Regional Development Centre, taking forward advocacy work aimed at mainstreaming ageing into global HIV/AIDS strategies and key initiatives. Representing HelpAge International to a wide audience will be a key element within this role, including developing and maintaining effective funding strategies and relationships with international donors who support our work.
Having significant management experience of development programmes, with at least 5 years in the African context, you will show an in-depth understanding of HIV/AIDS and related issues in Africa. With proven ability to represent HIV/AIDS issues at the highest levels, your experience in developing effective advocacy strategies to advocate issues affecting vulnerable groups is essential. Strong experience of engaging with donor organisations and developing successful funding proposals is also essential. Your ability and willingness to travel frequently within the African region and occasionally elsewhere is also required.
