The Department of International Law and Human Rights of the University for Peace, with the support of the Government of the Netherlands, has been working since October 2003 on an innovative human rights project, the Human Rights Educational Project (HREP). The aim of the project is to develop and disseminate educational materials related to human rights in response to the need of individuals and organisations, particularly in developing countries, to obtain convenient access to up-to-date human rights instruments and academic materials. The South African Aids Vaccine Initiative (Saavi) has confirmed that Impala Platinum Holdings has committed R2,5mn over five years while Transnet donated R1,5mn towards their HIV/Aids vaccine research, reports the Mail and Guardian. Saavi, indicating that the funds will be used to cover research to develop new test vaccines and run clinical tests, welcomed the funding and encouraged more support and partnerships of this nature.

About 2000 teachers poured onto the streets of Tema on Monday this week to demonstrate their disapproval against the Social Security Pension Scheme, which is currently being operated for teachers in the country. According to the teachers, the continuous use of the scheme for teachers clearly shows that the government had refused to recognize the enormous contribution of teachers to the socio-economic development of the country.

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) review of Mozambique's Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) and economic and social plan for 2003 says the country is well placed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are a set of objectives for human development, to be met by 2015, agreed to by the 147 countries that are signatories to the Millennium Declaration of September 2000.

We are looking for applicants who have:
- 2-3 hours access to the internet per week;
- A keen interest and knowledge of Africa;
- The ability to write clearly and accurately;
- The ability to comply with strict deadlines;
- The ability to work independently.

The volunteer will be required to use the internet to research information relating to Pambazuka News subject categories for inclusion in the newsletter. Information and guidelines will be provided. Because the newsletter has to keep within strict deadlines, we are looking for someone who will make a clear commitment of 2-3 hours per week. Work will need to be completed each week before Wednesday evening. Applicants may be located anywhere in the world, but preference will be given to those in Africa. On May 10 2004, ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidate Bingu Mutharika threatened to sue the “Weekend Nation” and “The Dispatch” newspapers for what he called defamatory articles about him.

On 10 May 2004, presidential candidate Bingu Mutharika, of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) party, threatened to sue the "Weekend Nation" and "The Dispatch" newspapers for what he referred to as "defamatory" articles. In early May, the two newspapers ran a series of stories alleging that Mutharika was fired as secretary-general of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) for "abuse of office" and "failure to motivate his management team". The articles were published after President Bakili Muluzi publicly stated that Mutharika is the only qualified candidate who can "scoop Malawi from its economic malaise."

The Forced Migration Studies Programme (FMSP) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is looking for a qualified and motivated person to be its new director. The FMSP is an interdisciplinary research and graduate teaching unit, to be based in the School of Social Sciences, dedicated to exploring and publicising the experiences of people displaced from their homes due to poverty, violence or persecution.

The premier of Uganda, Mr Apollo Nsibambi, on May13 re-launched the Muljibhai Foundation. The Foundation, a charity organisation registered in Uganda, provides scholarships for scientific and technical education in commerce, agriculture, engineering, medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, legal and information technology.

The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) says it is gravely concerned for the personal integrity of ten people arrested and allegedly tortured by the Sudanese armed forces. OMCT said it was reported that detainees were subjected to torture during their custody in the military camp in Bouram. Military intelligence officers allegedly tied them to each other with robes and put them into a lorry for four days without food or enough water. They were beaten with sticks and gun butts, punched, kicked and tied by the legs and arms upside down against a tree for many hours.

President Yoweri Museveni has warned lecturers to desist from using strikes as a means to seek redress when they have grievances. In a speech read by premier Apollo Nsibambi at Kyambogo University graduation last week, Museveni said strikes were not an appropriate method of resolving disagreements. "In case of dissatisfaction, I encourage the university council to engage in dialogue with staff. Work together to ensure a win-win situation. I do not encourage strikes," Museveni said.
