The Rwandan curriculum has been the subject of much controversy, with Rwandan history still not taught in schools and the difficulty of developing a peace education programme in the country. Despite challenges faced after the war, the Rwandan government prioritised the education sector development after the war, and budgetary allocations have increased. This is according to a UNESCO study that documents the management strategies in the education sector in Rwanda since 1994.

One important task of the Nordic Africa Institute is to establish and maintain relations with African research communities. This is inter alia carried out through a Guest Researchers' Programme, the aim of which is to provide opportunities for its participants to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and promoting scholarly exchange with Nordic research communities.

Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Herbert Murerwa announced recently that the government had embarked on an Ethno-based Writers’ Scheme that would, ideally, facilitate the development of education curricula in the country. Under the scheme, both lecturers and students at tertiary level would contribute in the writing of literature relevant to Zimbabwe’s political, economic and cultural realities. Murerwa said that the project was ostensibly aimed at promoting the production of learning materials.

As part of the pilot stage of the UNDP-UNESCO Joint Project for Leadership Development, it has been determined that 4 Africans from the Diaspora should be identified and offered the opportunity to undertake 2-month internships within Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Senegal. More children are going to school than ever before, but many drop out before grade 5 of primary school or graduate without mastering even a minimum set of cognitive skills, concludes the 2005 Education for All Global Monitoring Report. The Report, which monitors progress towards the six Education for All goals set by over 160 countries at the World Education Forum in Dakar (2000), finds that significant efforts are being made to increase resources, broaden access to school and improve gender parity. This is the main conclusion drawn from research outlined in a booklet, Transcending Racism in Church and Community, that was launched in Johannesburg recently. Eritrea’s education system is to undergo a US $27 million transformation to improve access to schools and boost quality. The government is planning to construct 349 new classrooms in 60 schools and equip science labs with funds received from the African Development Fund (ADF). Computer equipment and reference libraries are also to be established in schools around the country, said the ADF on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s powerful trade unions on Monday called off a general strike planned for the next day after the government, in an eleventh-hour move, offered an almost 10-percent cut in the price of domestic fuels. “The government has reduced the price of petrol,” John Odah, General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), told IRIN by phone from Abuja. “We therefore decided to suspend the strike.”
