CIVICUS seeks a qualified professional to oversee planning, fundraising, programme development and delivery of high-profile international convening events for civil society, in particular the CIVICUS World Assembly, but also other events that CIVICUS may organise. This is a management-level position with significant opportunity for creativity and initiative and,, for the right candidate, could result in a long-term appointment.
The CIVICUS World Assembly is a key convening event for civil society practitioners, activists, grant-makers, students, and researchers, as well as government officials and business leaders. The event has many roles, including: 1) placing the needs of communities on the global stage in a forum that encourages open and constructive dialogue within and across sectors; 2) providing a learning environment, where participants can share expertise and skills in such areas as advocacy training and fundraising; and, 3) creating an open space for people to connect with peers from around the world and within the local host community to re-energise their work.
Salary: Subject to qualifications and experience
Contract: One year with the possibility of extension
Key Tasks (subject to revision):
Actively lead on programme development (structure and content), fundraising, marketing and communications for the World Assembly, in close consultation with the World Assembly Programme Committee, CIVICUS staff and other external parties as appropriate
Facilitate the work of the World Assembly Programme Committee, including coordination of meetings and conference calls, and follow-up
Manage the selection process for conference workshops and presentations, and coordinate the recruitment of additional workshops as necessary to ensure an appropriate diversity of relevant topics and session formats
Oversee all aspects of conference speaker / presenter participation in consultation with the Programme Committee and CIVICUS staff and partners, including but not limited to development and refinement of presentations, scheduling, logistics, travel and accommodation, visas and travel grants
Manage the World Assembly budget and financial reporting
Serve as liaison with World Assembly partners and donors / sponsors
Supervise one World Assembly Associate
Qualifications:
Essential:
Commitment to CIVICUS’ vision and mission
Strong record of successful conference / event coordination, including international events
Sound knowledge of the issues affecting global civil society
Proven skills in fundraising for major events and / or civil society initiatives
Solid management, program, budgeting and financial oversight experience
The ability to formulate and implement a strategy in a collaborative environment
The ability to document decisions and processes to enhance organisational learning
Capacity to operate well under pressure and against multiple tight deadlines, and willing to work extra hours as necessary
Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of, or as leader of, a team
University degree
High level of computer proficiency (word processing, database, spreadsheets)
Demonstrated success in managing staff and volunteers
Desirable
Experience working in a multi-cultural environment
A track record of successful fundraising for international events
The ability to communicate effectively in at least two languages, one of which is English
Experience working in an organisation with multi-country operations
