Resource Alliance responds to growing demand for local resource mobilisation
The 5th International Workshop on Resource Mobilisation (IWRM) took place in Johannesburg on 26-28 March 2004 and attracted a record 271 participants from 48 countries worldwide. The IWRM is organised by the Resource Alliance. Simon Collings, CEO of the Resource Alliance, commented: "Each year, the number of attendees has increased. The response this year has been quite overwhelming and this reflects the increasing recognition of both the importance of local resource mobilisation and the need for training in this area. Through our events, we aim to help build the capacity of civil society organisations to mobilise local resources and establish greater financial stability and independence. The wide range of nationalities created a great atmosphere and really enhanced the learning potential. Initial feedback from delegates has been very positive."

The 5th International Workshop on Resource Mobilisation (IWRM) took place in Johannesburg on 26-28 March 2004 and attracted a record 271 participants from 48 countries worldwide. The IWRM is organised by the Resource Alliance and is the leading international forum for both training and policy discussion on local resource mobilisation.
The 5th IWRM was the largest and most international IWRM to-date and attracted delegates not only from all over Africa but also from a range of countries such as Ecuador, Bangladesh, Egypt and Malaysia. The participants were from NGOs, INGOs, universities, associations, trusts and foundations.
South Africa was selected because of its vibrant civil society and the event was organised in conjunction with Civicus and the Civicus World Assembly, which took place in Botswana the week preceding the IWRM. Previous IWRM's have taken place in Europe, Nairobi, India and Thailand.

The IWRM programme featured 30 leading international experts and practitioners including: Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, (African Women’s Development Fund, Ghana), Gail Smith (Department of Social Development, South Africa), Kurt MacLeod (PACT Cambodia), Tony Elischer (THINK Consulting Solutions, UK) and Kumi Naidoo (Civicus, South Africa). The core programme provided cutting-edge training in all aspects of resource mobilisation, including fundraising, communication, accountability and mobilising local involvement. The programme also included a Policy Day, which focused specifically on the wider policy environment in which not-for-profit organisations operate.
The full programme is available online and a report on the outcomes of the 5th IWRM will be available in May 2004. Plans are already underway for the 6th IWRM, and the dates and location will be announced shortly.
