Resident Guest Researcher grants
The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) works at the continental, national and local levels, to create positive societal attitudes, policies and practices that promote equity for girls in terms of access to, retention and performance and a good quality education. The FAWE Resident Guest Researcher Programme (FRGRP) provides short term grants to selected guest researchers from universities to conduct three-month action research, based on themes identified by FAWE each year.

THE ORGANIZATION:
FAWE works at the continental, national and local levels, to create
positive societal attitudes, policies and practices that promote
equity for girls in terms of access to, retention and performance and
a good quality education. FAWE's concern centers on influencing the
transformation of education systems to achieve gender equity.
FAWE RESIDENT GUEST RESEARCHER PROGRAMME [FRGRP]:
The FAWE Resident Guest Researcher Programme (FRGRP) provides short-
term grants to selected guest researchers from universities to conduct
3-month action research, based on themes identified by FAWE each
year.
An individual's specific research topic is agreed upon between the
researcher and FAWE.
Researchers with own research funding or sabbatical leave support,
interested in undertaking short term studies on specific topics in
girls' education in sub-Saharan Africa, but not necessarily within the
FRGRP selected themes for the year, may apply. Their applications will
be considered separately.
This is a residential programme requiring guest researchers to be
fulltime at FAWE for the period of the grant.
ELIGIBILITY:
The FRGRP is open to applicants with doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees.
Applicants should be scholars and/or researchers holding faculty
positions at institutions of higher education in Africa. They should
have demonstrated and recognized research excellence. Expertise in
the subject matter of their proposed project is a distinct advantage.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
A panel of distinguished academicians/researchers will review
applications for the FRGRP. Selection will be based on the following
criteria:
. Qualifications of the applicant
. Quality and feasibility of the research project plan
. The extent to which the study will contribute to the achievement of
objectives set out in the FRGRP
. Likelihood that the project will be completed successfully within the
period and budget provided
. The extent to which the proposed research is action oriented.
DESCRIPTION OF STUDY:
The applicant should provide a detailed description of the proposed
study based on the following format:
. Background to the study
. Problem statement
. Literature review
. Objective of the study
. A clear outline of the plan for carrying out the study
. Description of research methods and approaches to be used
. The significance of the study towards the overall improvement of
girls' education in Africa.
STUDY THEMES FOR THIS YEAR:
1. Gender responsive pedagogy for Mathematics, Science and Technology
subjects.
2. The status of girls' education in sub-Saharan Africa: Five years
after Dakar.
3. Girls in conflict and post conflict situations in Africa.
4. The status of women in African Universities.
THE APPLICATION:
A complete application must include:
. A completed FRGRP Application Form;
. A concise and full description of the research proposal which must be
within the themes identified for the year;
. A curriculum vitae;
. Two letters of recommendation in support of the research to be conducted.
These should be sent directly to FAWE by 15 MAY (the application
deadline). Notification to successful applicants is on 30 July. Only
successful applicants will be contacted.
Once a successful applicant is notified, FAWE will organize signing of
a contract and make arrangements for travel to FAWE Headquarters in
Nairobi on a mutually agreed date. The research is expected to
commence any time upon signing of the contract but not later than 3
months from date of notification.
