Our Pan-African family honors the life and transition of Assata Shakur, who joined the ancestors on September 25, 2025, in Havana, Cuba, at the age of 78.
Assata was more than a name in the struggle — she was a living testament to resistance, dignity, and uncompromising liberation. For decades, the U.S. state branded her a fugitive, but to us she was always a freedom fighter. She lived her final years beyond the reach of oppression, under the protection of revolutionary Cuba. She lived free — and she died free.
Though we mourn her physical absence, we celebrate her transition. Assata has returned to the circle of our ancestors, where her spirit will continue to inspire generations. She is now forever with Harriet, Malcolm, Amílcar, Winnie, and so many others who gave everything for our people’s liberation.
Let her words and example remain alive in us: to resist, to love our people, to never bow to oppression. Assata Shakur is gone in body, but her spirit is permanent, untouchable, and free.
We celebrate her life. We continue her struggle. We honor her freedom.
