Horn Relief is seeking a qualified and committed individual to join the Horn Relief team as the Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator will be a full-time member of the Horn Relief staff, working with the Management and Field Teams in Nairobi, Kenya and the Horn Relief offices in Somalia. The Program Coordinator reports to and works most closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Field Director. The Program Coordinator will develop and implement fundraising strategies, and will be responsible for program design and linking field operations to program administration and planning.

The Open Society Institute (OSI), a private operating and grantmaking foundation, aims to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights, and economic, legal, and social reform. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to support the rule of law, education, public health, and independent media.

This paper from the Economic Research Forum (ERF), Egypt includes causal evidence that lower crude rates of school attendance for Egyptian children are not due to limited access to schools but rather to a substantial burden of work. Although some activists argue that all child labour should be abolished, the authors prefer a more nuanced approach which does not assume that all work - whether it is paid or unpaid, labour force or domestic - is good or bad for children and youth. While some work activities of children are unquestionably detrimental to their physical and/or mental well-being, most tasks undertaken by Egyptian 6-14 year olds do not fall clearly in these categories.

Tanzania’s government has temporarily closed two newspapers for allegedly violating the law. The prime minister’s office ordered Tanzania Daima not to publish over the weekend while Amani, a tabloid, was to suspend production and distribution for 28 days. The government accused Daima of maligning President Benjamin Mkapa, an offence under the Newspapers Act.

Shops, schools and banks were shut in many parts of southeast Nigeria on Monday (December 5), the first day of a two-day strike called by a separatist group refusing to abandon its long fight for an independent state. The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) called the stay-at-home protest to back a demand for independence for the region's ethnic Igbos. The group is also protesting the continued detention of its leader, Ralph Uwazurike, currently facing trial for treason. One MASSOB activist said the strike was but a "warning" of things to come if their leader is not released.

The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Open Society Justice Initiative (the Justice Initiative) are pleased to invite applications for the Human Rights Fellows Program for the 2006-2008 session.

This program was launched in 2003 by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Open Society Justice Initiative, in collaboration with Conectas Human Rights, the Open Society Foundation (South Africa) and South African, Mozambican and Angolan Civic organizations.

The Fellows Program is 20 months in duration and involves both academic study and practical experience in human rights/public interest advocacy. Up to six human rights lawyers and activists from Angola and Mozambique will be selected to participate. Candidates must be nominated by human rights NGOs based in Angola or Mozambique.

Every day, thousands of Africans living abroad line up in money-transfer offices to wire home the odd dollar they are able to save. From the US, Saudi Arabia, Germany and Belgium - the top sources of remittances to developing countries - the total of money sent is more than foreign development aid. Yet most of the money sent home by migrants is unrecorded, and therefore does not enter many countries' national statistics. Development planners increasingly stress the importance of tracking this money. That could help governments try to increase remittances as a source of development finance and better channel them into productive sectors.

The International Crisis Group (Crisis Group) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, with over 110 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict. Since the 1980s, the African continent has been involved in major political, economic and social change processes (e.g. democratisation, withdrawal and decentralisation of the State, rise of civil society, etc.). At regional and sub-regional level, integration processes are taking place while the creation of the African Union (AU) reflects the determination to move forward in constructing an African citizenship and defining a new partnership with the rest of the world (amongst others through NEPAD). On the whole, populations aspire to more democracy, transparency, justice and room to develop their own initiatives. The Forum aims at constructing a Pan African alliance for change Both the African Union Commission and the Alliance for changing governance in Africa recognise that strategies aimed at transforming the way in which societies and public affairs are managed, will require a long-term perspective. This meeting of minds led to the decision to co-organise this Forum.

Christian Aid is launching its gifts catalogue www.presentaid.org with a spoof Christmas single Feeling Flush this Christmas? on 17 November 2005 to help tackle sanitation problems such as 'flying toilets' which affect many people in third world slums. The single is a remix of the Christmas carol We Three Kings of Orient Are. No musical instruments are used. Instead the carol is composed of unusual sounds associated with gifts from the Present Aid catalogue. The 'musicians' include a mosquito choir, a chorus of cows, sheep, and goats as well as toilet flushes. The term 'flying toilets' might sound funny but it's deadly serious. In some African slums, such as Kibera, in Nairobi, up to 15,000 people could be sharing a single block of six toilets. Without running water people are forced to use plastic bags to defecate in. They then throw the bags into the street - and hence are known as 'flying toilets'.
