Faced with changing economic conditions and more competition, nonprofit organizations are increasingly being pressed to measure and report their outcomes to funders and other constituents. At the same time, service organizations are becoming aware of the need to create feedback loops involving constituents as a way of improving their services. How nonprofits measure the impact of their work is the subject of "Outcome Measurement in Nonprofit Organizations: Current Practices and Recommendations," a new report from Independent Sector and the Urban Institute.

Restructuring and Resistance charts some of the rapid changes in social, political and economic relations which have been occurring in western European society, and the new conflicts which are emerging at the heart of these changes. The particular focus is the last twenty years of the European Unification process. The book is the voices of many different people directly involved in diverse grassroots struggles and processes of social change from across (mainly) western Europe. 77 chapters from 15 countries chart the breakdown in social consensus which has marked western Europe in the post Second World War years, and the emergence of new challenges to the current social order which this breakdown is giving rise to. Analyses of restructuring processes and accounts of resistance are intertwined with each other, showing that they are inseparable from each other. As well as having a wide diversity of stories, the book is also illustrated, with a wide range of cartoons, photos, and propaganda materials.

UNESCO has published a database of more than 600 human rights research and training institutions world-wide on the Internet. This database is the electronic version of the World Directory of Human Rights Research and Training Institutions. Searches on the database may be performed in English, French and Spanish.

The initiator of this performance is Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot. For the time being his chief project is a world wide art manifestation titled The Pillar of Shame. Within a decade, 10 sculptures, 8 metres in height will be set up to mark severe infringements against human rights. The first three sculptures have been mounted in Hong Kong (1997), Mexico (1999) and Brazil (2000). The aim is to highlight the ethical basis of our civilization to ensure the survival of the Planet. This is also the aim of this performance that will pinpoint the greed of the big pharmaceutical companies who are filing a lawsuit in defence of their patent rights, with the consequence that millions of people in the poor countries will die of lack of medicine.

In recent years, social change activists of all stripes have increasingly incorporated visual art as a component of their strategies for building grassroots political movements. From the radical cheerleaders and the marching turtles of the anti-WTO protests held in Seattle in November of 1999, to the "puppetistas" imprisoned during last year's Republican national convention, this movement of "art from below" is changing the face of political protest and direct action.

The exhibition will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies Library, London. Monday 30 April – Tuesday 8 May.The art was produced by participants at SVTG art workshops, organised as part of the SVTG rehabilitation programme. The works to be exhibited were produced in February 2000 and have already been exhibited at the American University in Cairo and in Geneva as part of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
