The ADF is seeking a full-time co-ordinator to help facilitate networking efforts among African democracy activists. The position's duties will include the development of a database of ADF members and the organising of meetings and training programs.

CHF International

The Program Manager will be responsible for assisting in the rapid expansion of CHF's program by contributing to its design and implementation. Other duties will include the production of regular progress reports and the management of the daily operations of the organisation's new office.

Throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, fewer than half of primary-school age children go to school; enrolment in secondary school in 22 countries is below 20%; and less than 10% of the workforce has matriculated. The answer is as obvious as the statistics are alarming. Education ought to lie at the core of Africa's development strategies, the primary means by which the continent works to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of stability, prosperity and prowess.

GOAL

The Country Director is responsible for the management and ongoing development/extension of GOAL's work within Angola. Amongst other areas, this work includes providing assistance in the post conflict reconstruction and in the return of IDPs and refugees to their areas of origin.

International Rescue Committee

Art for Humanity (AfH) is issuing a call for partners for its upcoming project 'Women Artists and Poets Advocating Children's Rights'. The mission of AfH is to awaken society at large to a sense of moral and social responsibility for Human Rights through an innovative use of visual arts. CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, the Secretariat of the World Bank Civil Society Joint Facilitation Committee (JFC), is seeking a Senior Researcher to produce proposals on how engagement between civil society and the World Bank could be more transparent and relevant.

The Namibian Government’s bi-weekly New Era newspaper went daily on Monday, August 2 2004, amid questions about its financial viability and the possible burden on the taxpayer. Southern Africa Report (SAR), was published by the Toronto Committee for the Liberation of Southern Africa (TCLSAC) that later became the Toronto Committee for Links between Southern Africa and Canada (TCLSAC). About 60% of the 42 000 Liberian refugees mostly residing in the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the Central Region will now have the opportunity to undergo training in Information Communication Technology, the Vice President for the Association for the Reconstruction of Liberia, an Accra-based NGO, Mr. James B. Kollie Snr said. This is in addition to 1000 refugees who are expected to enrol in Ghanaian Universities and Polytechnics throughout the country.

Achievement of the Education for All (EFA) goal of universal primary education by 2015 requires that the education system can attract, educate and retain sufficient numbers of well qualified teachers. The Zimbabwe Teachers' Association ZIMTA and the Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) have called on the government to prevent political violence against teachers in the run-up to the 2005 general election. "Only the government can protect our members from political violence," ZIMTA secretary general, Denis Sinyolo told ZimOnline.

VoIP telephony has been largely illegal in Africa but a new breed of telecoms regulators will open up its use and this is most likely to happen in West Africa, according to the authors of a new report published by Balancing Act this month (http://www.balancingact-africa.com) For the first time ever, this report looks in detail at the state of the Internet in 22 West African countries.

In the Kounoungo refugee camp in Eastern Chad, Darfurian children are eagerly attending school, after months of witnessing extreme violence, death and chaos in their homeland. Teachers and schools remind the children of their lives before the Janjaweed drove them from their villages, forcing 1.2 million Darfurians into the hostile desert lands. There are 10,000 people living in the Kounoungo refugee camp. Over 75 per cent are women and children. Temporary schools can provide the children with a sense of stability in the overcrowded camps.

Kenyan President Kibaki has urged leaders in the community and at all levels to provide credible role models for the youth to emulate. The President said proper socialisation of the youth was not the responsibility of parents and teachers alone, adding that community leaders had a role to play.

Parents have been urged to invest in their children's education as it is less expensive than ignorance. Proprietor of Comsey Nursery and Primary School, Mr. Emmanuel Apalowo said this recently at the school's prize giving and valedictory service. Apalowo said if Nigerians could invest half of what they spend on frivolities on education, the system will be the better for it.

Located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, the National Humanities Center is a private nonprofit institution that provides an environment for individual research and the exchange of ideas among scholars.
