The Open Society Initiative for East Africa (OSIEA) is hiring a Programme Officer to develop the organization’s work inUganda and elsewhere in the region. The position will most likely be based in Kampala or Nairobi (home of the OSIEA head office).
Responsibilities The Programme Officer will report to the OSIEA director and he/she will:
Assist in the development of OSIEA program priorities and strategies, particularly with regard to Uganda, but possibly also with regard to Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and Somaliland. He/she will meet with civil society and other actors, attend meetings, solicit and evaluate grant proposals, follow-up with grantees and potential grantees, monitor and evaluate programs. Coordinate meetings, conferences and partnerships. Travel to relevant meetings or site visits as necessary.
Qualifications Demonstrated commitment to the values of an open society and its promotion. Five or more years of work on Africa-wide human rights or civil society issues, with a particular focus on experience in East Africa. Knowledge of civil society organizations and networks within Africa, particularly East Africa. Familiarity with debates around transitional justice an advantage. Experience with grant-giving desirable.
Excellent oral and written communications skills in English.
Demonstrated skills in research, writing and editing for publication.
Strong organizational and management skills with attention to detail.
Ability to listen and communicate clearly and effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Ability to work effectively both independently without detailed daily supervision and as a member of a team, on a wide range of tasks.
Discretion and ability to handle confidential issues.
Advanced degree in international relations, journalism, law or the social sciences, and/or extensive experience in human rights or civil society work is required.
Willingness to travel within the East African region and internationally.
Compensation Competitive salary commensurate with experience and ability.
