COSATU STATEMENT ON CHILDREN’S DAY

COSATU notes with concern that this important children’s
Day takes place amid shocking statistics on Child labour both
nationally and internationally. What is even of more concern is
that this alarming statistics are happening mostly in Africa.
This is the reason why COSATU few months ago endorsed
the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions’
international campaign to uproot child labour.
Dominating the South African news recently has been social
exploitation, harassment and abusing of children, especially
sexually, by members of the public and protection unit.

The known fact is that children are the most vulnerable in the
society. They are dependent and therefore rely on their
parents and adults members of the family and community for
protection, guidance and care.
On this day COSATU will be calling to the members of the
society to protect Children from, among others:
· Kidnapping and other forms of social alienation.
· Sexual and emotional abuse
· Diseases, including those that are HIV/Aids and
smoking related
· Labour and any other form of physical harm

COSATU will also be using the day to demand:
· Child-care facilities, especially at workplaces
· Compulsory paid leave
· Health care benefits
· That men share parental rights responsibilities
including parenting and maintenance, and
· That bosses stop child labour, abuse and rape.
· Recreational facilities
· That Government ratify the ILO convention no 183
on Maternity Protection.

The federation notes that children around the world continue
to suffer in the hands of irresponsible and non caring
employees who capitalise on their labour and their parent’s for
their financial gain. We are calling for a stop to this now. We
say children deserve better!
